Family Photoshoot Survival Tips
Take family photos and live to tell the tale
Fall is here and brought the busy family photography season along with it! It’s go-go-go-time from the start of September to the holidays at Lightshed Photography Studio. Before we dive into the season, we brainstormed ways to reduce our client’s stress and ensure everyone’s family photoshoot goes smoothly. We’ve scouted new locations, compiled outfit inspiration, and even lengthened our sessions!
We know it’s a challenge to carve out time for a family photoshoot. It can feel incredibly overwhelming when the big day comes, especially with multiple little ones. Though a family photoshoot is rarely perfect, it doesn’t have to be hectic if you lean on us to handle the heavy lifting. With our help, we promise you’ll survive, have fun, and even be proud of your crazy kids when you see the results.
Lean on us
We’ll be with you every step of the way to ensure the process is smooth sailing from start to finish. If you have a creative vision in mind, we’ll work together to achieve it with the perfect location and outfit choices. The game plan for a family of three is very different than that for an extended family – every shoot is custom! Need some help with ideas? Don’t worry – that’s our job and we’re happy to help.
Being comfortable and confident is a must to survive a family photoshoot, so we always consider everyone’s likes and dislikes during the planning process. We all know little ones don’t take well to scratchy sweaters and stiff shoes, and parents want to look their best in flattering outfits. With your vision in mind, we design outfit inspiration and send links for easy online shopping. We attempt to avoid any out-of-stock stress by choosing examples that are easy to find in stores (and who doesn’t love a trip to Target?). Leave it to us to coordinate everyone so you can focus on enjoying the moment!
Be prepared (with snacks)
What is your kids’ favorite snack? Bring all of them. We promise we’ll need them.
Bribery isn’t typically the best tactic, but it can be at a family photoshoot with the right strategy! We’ve heard them all: donuts, ice cream, candy, you name it. Beware of the fine line between encouraging good behavior and creating little snack-fiends, so use bribery sparingly. Before you know it, you’ll have a package of fruit snacks in every picture. If you bring the snacks, we’ll keep the little ones smiling and focused!
Don’t forget to bring dog treats to help keep the pup still for the pictures – they need a little incentive too!
Live in the moment
Do your best to go with the flow. Easier said than done, we know. For parents, an infinite number of factors are involved to keep the day on track. The day of your shoot might feel chaotic, but we promise you won’t remember that when you see the results! Remember, it’s our job to ensure everyone is happy, having fun, and feeling their best. Yours is to cherish a memorable time with family.
These survival tactics are an effective tool but unfortunately aren’t always a guarantee. We’re experts in the field, but sometimes kids just aren’t having it. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost! There might be tears and tantrums – we can’t promise there won’t. We can promise something even better: not a single bump in the road will outshine your special family. The proof is in the pictures!
